The Role: 

We are currently working on a project called Raising Places, a national effort funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Raising Places engages local leaders in six US communities to build healthier places where children and families can thrive. The project has already caught the attention of a wide variety of people (receiving 155 community applications from across the country) and now we need someone to help us tell our story as it unfolds.

We are looking for a Design Writer to observe and document Raising Places. The Design Writer also will be responsible for working on our firm’s overall communication to make it clear, interesting, creative, and focused. This role will spend roughly 80% of its time on Raising Places and 20% of its time on other billable projects, proposal development, developing case studies, and other communications needs.

This is a 10 month full time position with the firm: from August 2017 through May 2018. Upon completion of Raising Places, there is potential for the candidate to continue in the role in a full time and permanent status based on business need and performance. Salary is commensurate with skills and experience. The position is located in Chicago, and will involve weekly travel for approximately 18 weeks of the project. All travel expenses are covered by Greater Good Studio.

Role Specifics

Specific responsibilities for Raising Places include:

Gathering information from teammates, project participants and expert advisors, via interviews, photos and observation.

Synthesizing this information to identify relevant and timely stories that meet larger communications objectives.

Crafting stories for Raising Places-relevant platforms including blog, social media and email newsletter.

Posting and sharing communications regularly across channels.

Working with the project team to draft content for other project efforts, such as media relations, conference applications and national convening

More general responsibilities include:

Supporting the development of proposals for submission to potential client organizations.

Developing compelling case studies to demonstrate the positive impact Greater Good Studio has brought to existing or past clients.

Collaborating in the development and definition of the “voice” , as well as thinking verbally and visually, contributing to the structure, look and feel of a client’s project.

Interacting closely with our Design team to create and refine content for a chosen design direction, and identifying alternative message strategies for achieving clients’ objectives.

Writing on a number of topics for multiple platforms, as needs arise (e.g. website, blog, articles, social updates, case studies, guides, white papers, etc.)

Minimum of 3 years of experience in communications, business, marketing, advertising or a related field and 2-4 years writing for web, email and social media.

An undergraduate degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Advertising, Integrated/Strategic Communications, or a related field.

Experience working with graphic designers is a must; experience in an agency or similar client services firms is preferred.

Ability to independently organize and manage yourself and your work as well as able to work in highly collaborative team environments as well.

Comfort with multiple and often complex writing assignments, styles and disciplines and the capability to effectively articulate, present and explain your writing choices.

Ability to adjust direction and work deliverables to address shifting priorities.Ideally, a passion for human-centered design, community development, social impact, and travel.
